Summer 2011

Something for you to take on holiday to remind you of home !

Mobile Library

The cuts to the Library service in Somerset are resulting in the following changes to our Mobile Library service

·         We will get a visit once every 4 weeks rather than every 3 weeks.

·         There will only be one stop in the village (at the Hall), currently it stops twice (Tel Box and Hall).

·         We will be part of the Wincanton route rather than the Wells route.

Considering our very low usage we believe that the proposed level of service is acceptable.

More information about the Library changes can be found at http://www.somerset.gov.uk/irj/public/services/directory/service?rid=/guid/20ba929a-c577-2e10-8497-fb115f202d94

Our first visit on the new schedule is on Tuesday 16th August at 10:25 to 10:40 at the Memorial Hall

It will probably be possible to amend the stop within the village if the Hall is not the most convenient, so please let the Parish Council have your views.

Please pass on this message to anyone else who you believe may be affected.

Coleford Recycling Centre

We have won the battle to retain our local “tip” for now, albeit at a cost. However it is being reviewed again in September. For now there is a charge of £2 per visit with reduced opening times as follows:

Mon 8am-7pm      Tue-Wed 8am-4pm     Thu-Fri Closed      Sat 8am-4pm      Sun8am-1pm

Click here for full details.  Like lots of other rural services, the message is “Use it or Loose it”

Village Stones

The sub-committee of Vicki Taylor, Rose Martin and Bren Wigmore are progressing this exciting project to replace our rusty village signs with quarry stones overlaid with carvings designed by village groups and produced by Jeff “the Shepton Sheep” Body.  Design sessions with Jeff started on 16th June with the Art Group and the presentation at the village fete. Further dates will be organised for collaboration with the Over 50s Community Activity Group, the school children, the Youth Club and the wider public through a couple of sessions at the pub from September.

Here’s the one at Croscombe which you may have seen.

Part Night Lighting

This means switching off the street lights between 12 midnight and 5.30am and will reduce our carbon footprint, reduce light pollution and (of course) save money. It has already been adopted in several other counties and we will probably be one of the first villages to get it in Somerset. We have not yet been given final details of which lights will be affected and when it will be implemented.

Full details, Frequently Asked Questions and a comment form are on the Somerset website http://www.somerset.gov.uk/irj/public/council/initiatives/initiative?rid=/wpccontent/Sites/SCC/Web%20Pages/Council/Initiatives/Reduction%20of%20street%20lighting%20in%20Somerset

Please be advised against a knee-jerk reaction to fit more Security lights as this will negate all the advantages and result in cat triggered flashing lights all night! In fact, if you do have a security light please ensure it is not brighter than you need and it is not too sensitive (to animals).

Welcome Pack

The Village Welcome Pack was distributed to all households a couple of years ago and to all new arrivals as required. It is now beginning to show it’s age and needs a makeover (don’t we all!).  We will be distributing a new draft to various groups to update prior to reissue. It will then be available to download from the village website and only printed for new arrivals.

School Warning Sign

Following several previous attempts, the Parish Council has applied for funding through Gloria Cawood, County Councillor, to supply and install a “Wig-Wag” flashing light next to the School sign as you approach from Vobster. Watch this space.

Parish Councillor vacancies

Since the May “Election” we have three vacancies on the Parish Council. Getting involved in the local community and helping with local issues is a very worthwhile way of making a contribution to the area in which we live and work. If you would like to be co-opted onto the Parish Council, please do not hesitate to contact Sandrine Vaillant - Clerk to the Council at Burleigh Cottage, Leigh Street,  01373 812 563, email  - lom.pc@btinternet.com  - for further information and a friendly chat. We look forward to hearing from you.

Enjoy your summer (if we get one!)
