Village Signs

If you are interested in helping to design NEW Village signs to replace 2 of the old village signs, with the addition of a 3^rd one, then you are welcome to come along to Jeff Body’s sessions listed below….

Dependant on the numbers created as many designs as possible will be used on the stones.

The following is a guide for the 3 sessions that Jeff Body will be leading.  It will usually involve 3 sessions per group (as above).

1. Introduce carving :- materials, tools provided &a chance for  hands- on experience - it can get dusty so it might be a good idea not to wear "good" clothes. If anyone finds this session difficult in terms of standing for a while etc. then bring along any draft sketches to work on. Jeff Body will supply the materials & tools.

2. Ask individuals to bring along any possible A5 designs/sketches which Jeff will be able to give advice on how to use them for carving. They will each be given their own clay tiles, that Jeff will have prepared for them, to begin carving their designs on (ideas suggested if they are stuck).

     3.  Continue carving their own tiles & carving the village name on plaques.

Some people might just like to just experience the process of carving if they are hesitant about offering designs / sketches.  The "stone" used is actually plaster and is very easy to carve but Jeff will explain the process in the 1st sessions.

As far as ideas go, designs should be based on current , past or historic life, things, places, activities etc  in the village. For example an idea based around the church has been suggested and that could be a useful place to start BUT PLEASE feel free to think of your own source for inspiration! Jeff will bring a copy of one of the books about the history of Leigh to the sessions but please encourage anyone if they want to bring along something for themselves .... books, artefacts, photos etc. Anything that might provide inspiration for ideas is welcome.
